NEILL, MARY GARDNER AND SAMUEL SACHS II, DIRECTORS' FOREWORD
A Private View: American Paintings from the Manoogian Collection
United States: Yale University Art Gallery, 1993. Soft Cover. ISBN: 089467062X. Softcover is green ground with inset painting, on the cover, of a portrait by John Singer Sargent. Gold lettering on front; white lettering on green spine. Endpapers are grey/green. Pages are clean and tight; appears as if unused. Illstrated with 67 mostly color pictures. This is the exhibition catalogue put out by Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven and the Detroit Institutute of Arts for exhibitions that ran from 11 September 1993 through 6 March 1994, in both museums. Richard Manoogian is one of the foremost art collectors in the USA. He founded Masco Corporation and uses much of the profit to collect an exceptional body of art. He likes to have exhibitions of his works, usually broken down by categories [as is this one, on American Paintings], in the areas where he has factories and offices, so that his employees may enjoy the works. This was a terrific show, as have been all of his exhibitions [being in the Detroit area I get to see them]. The foreword is written by the then directors of the museums. Sections are Foreword; Preface; Acknowledgments; Contributors to the Catalogue; Catalogue; Artists' Biographies; Index of Artists and Works in the Exhibition. Fabulous collection and catalogue by an industrialist with a highly discerning eye. Oversized, 4#. ; B/W and The Color Illustrations; 8 1/2 x 11 1/2; 147 pages; Cover has light rubbing/scuffing; some minor shelf wear and bumping. Near Fine .
